The focus of this poster is not the effects of global warming on the environment but rather a deeper look at what the term environment means and how this construct can shape not only you but those around you. The poster will be shaped by my core values as a designer and a person aware of the importance of human rights. As a designer, it is our responsibility to use our skills thoughtfully and with purpose, to think beyond commercial and business. We have the greatest tools available to us to use for social change or for any number of issues and we must be aware that our communication skills are undeniably powerful. The message will draw inspiration from the text ‘Can the Sub Altern Speak?’ by Gayatri Spivak with the focus on the mimicry the sub altern has to perform in order to succeed in the world. Although, the practice of the sub altern performing as the subject ultimately renders the subject hollow and irrelevant. An example would be the notion that if a group of people are not overly violent and masculine, they are feminised and seen as inferior. The self is defined by what we are not, meaning categories of people exist because there is another to compare it to. With this notion we can then go on to say that identity can be defined as much as by what we are as by who we are. This topic effects designers in the sense that we as designers must remove ourselves from the design and become a whole different entity in order to create good design. Anything out of place, such as designers who neither fit into the subject nor the sub altern, must be rendered invisible. With all this information being absorbed, questions will undoubtably arise. Can you remove your own personal marks from the design in order to make it more acceptable? Where is the power in the relationship? Finally, can the sub altern speak if they have a phallus? With this information established and our questions lined up, the poster will visually represent these relationships as well as making individuals aware of what is happening around the world with regard to our basic human rights and their violations.

Welcome to our 2018 edition!
It will be a year of significant change for us: the final edition of our poster contest in its current form. You can find the reasons for this decision here, together with the announcement of this year's them. On a practical level, the schedule for the poster contest has condensed into seven months.
