About me
Born in Wuhan, China where he completed his Bachelor of design degree and received a M.F.A. in graphic design. Chen has been working as an art educator since then. In 2002, he moved to the United States, where he is currently a professor of graphic design at The Pennsylvania State University.
For years Chen has carried out extensive research on �image only� poster design. He believes that graphical communication would surmount culture/language barriers and boost international understanding. Chen became internationally famous when he was awarded the first prize at Chaumont poster festival in 1998 with his poster �Victory�. His work has appeared in many prestigious publications and exhibitions, has received numerous awards, and is in several permanent collections around the world. He has had laureate solo exhibitions at the 1999 Chaumont Poster Festival, the 2003 Trnava Poster Triennial and the 2007 Colorado Poster Biennial.
With the style of �image only� design, his students� work has also been recognized with numerous of awards, including the first place at the 40th Print magazine�s International Student Design Competition and the first prize of the 3rd World Biennial of Student Poster.
Outside of his designing and teaching, Chen is also a writer. His articles and critiques covered broad topics in the graphic design and design education areas. He has authored and edited more than ten books.
